Testing with multiple browsers

Web Design 2 Comments

As a web developer it is critical to test with multiple browsers.  Since 1996, when I first began developing web pages, I have always tested with the current version of IE and Netscape (now Firefox).  That still provides a fairly good test, but today, with many people (rightfully) hanging on to older version of MS Windows and older version of IE, it is important to test with older versions of IE also. The problem with installing multiple versions of IE is that Microsoft says it is part of Windows, so you can only have one version installed.  Yes, there are tools which allow multiple versions of IE to be installed, but all the ones I have tried have quirks.  But for a few months I have been using a new tool, the Browser Sandbox.

The Browser Sandbox is a free service that allows you to run Windows browsers on-demand without installation, although you must install a plug-in the first time you use it.  Currently the following browsers are provided:

  • IE 6, 7, and 8
  • Firefox 2, 3, and 3.5
  • Safari 3 and 4
  • Opera 9 and 10
  • Google Chrome 2

Officially this service is a demo for the company’s actualization product, but hopefully it remains available for a while.

I appreciate you for this kind of fascinating write-up! I also have a weblog and i am wondering, where can i get a hold of these kinds of fantastic theme like yours?

This is a custom theme with special modifications to integrate it into my static pages. As such, it is a little messy and would need to be cleaned up before anyone else could use it.
